Experience Description

What memory this came to me at a later date, within a meditative state. I had open heart surgery, which included perfusion and the stopping of my heart. My memory of this was a feeling of being far below myself (my mind felt that movement). What I experienced was a feeling and a place. The feeling was similar to what one might feel in the mind, sinking into a hot bath, or an orgasm, it was pure pleasure, warmth, ease. The place was a room, enclosed but not (I could tell there was physical space, but undefined). This memory lasted several seconds, and my minds eye was not distinctly with me physically in that moment. I felt I emerged from somewhere else, unlike how it feels to remember something distinct. Prior to my surgery and after I had strong premonition of what was to happen (e.g., that my original date was to be cancelled; it was), and this was accompanied by a black-light behind my eyes, and a voice separate from mine which was not male or female, heard as if said directly in my ear. I can not explain it any better than that.

Near Death Experience Elements

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event?
No, Surgery-related, Clinical death (cessation of breathing or heart function)
How do you consider the content of your experience?
Entirely pleasant
Did you feel separated from your body?
No
How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness?
More consciousness and alertness than normal, I was hyper-aware of my physical being, like I was experiencing it as I never had before. It was like saying, "This is what you are in this existence." My mind felt above and disconnected from what was happening in preparation for the surgery. It made me think of WW1 soldiers as they were about to go over the top of the trench and into certain death.
At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness?
I was at my highest level of consciousness in the day leading up to my surgery. I was aware I was about to have a close form of death. My consciousness felt tethered to my physical body, and in what felt to be a psychic experience of knowing my surgery was canceled. I acknowledge this question could be for what people experienced within their near-death experience, but as mine was a known event ahead of time, I did feel in a very different place mentally in this timeframe.

Yes, I have these experiences in dreams. Other times, I dream of people I haven’t seen or spoken to in a long time and wake up to an email from them.

Experience was definitely real, Same as question 56.
At any time in your life, has anything ever reproduced any part of the experience?
Yes, Orgasm, hot baths.
Is there anything else that you would like to add about your experience?
I am not afraid to die.
Did the questions asked and information that you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?
No, My experience was planned, and I feel that there is something to this. I felt in my premonition before surgery that the connection of human minds (what else could that be?) is like seeing light on a knife’s edge—blinding and brief. The impact on my outlook on life happened in the months after my experience, not immediately surrounding that event.
