Experience Description
I shouldn't have been born in 1970. My mom's health didn't allow her to have a baby. Miraculously, I was born via cesarean section.
When I was two and a half years old, I had an appendectomy. I developed peritonitis and was on the verge of life and death again.
At age 16, I suffered a life-threatening injury that caused severe internal abdominal bleeding. It seemed someone or something was trying to remove me from this life. I was taken to the emergency room while my blood pressure dropped drastically and my pulse was barely detectable. I just wanted to lie down and sleep. I was exhausted. I felt like a heavy, pulling pain under my left collarbone. The ambulance arrived and took me to the hospital.
The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. They took X-rays and performed other tests, but nothing helped. They decided to perform an emergency laparoscopy without anesthesia. There was no time to wait, as I was already fading; though still conscious. They made two incisions; one near my navel and another on my left side. Then they began inflating me with air. The pain was so unbearable that I cursed the doctors and begged them to kill me because death seemed like an escape. Finally, it ended. The air was drained, the pain subsided, and the doctors understood the issue. They prepped me for surgery.
I was already on the operating table when they asked about my tolerance to anesthesia. They placed a brace in front of my face and draped a blue sheet over it so I wouldn’t see the injection. Then I blacked out.
Before these events, I was a staunch atheist. I dreamed of being a pilot, and only "materialist believers" were allowed to fly abroad. My father, a military officer and communist, reinforced these beliefs. This was in 1986.
Before losing consciousness, I felt overwhelming pain and weakness. I was completely indifferent to my fate. During the operation, my awareness returned. I thought the anesthesia was wearing off and feared the pain would return. I tried to signal the doctors by wiggling my toes, moving my arms, and blinking. But, nothing worked. I feared I was paralyzed, and started imagining life in a wheelchair at age 16.
Then suddenly, I was outside my body, near the ceiling above the operating light. I saw myself below, surrounded by five doctors. A tube was in my mouth, and the anesthesiologist swore, saying that I was in cardiac arrest and needed a thinner tube. They scrambled. One doctor injected my chest with a long needle. I remembered every detail, including their faces and their words. I felt weightless and euphoric, as if freed from exhaustion.
I woke up on the operating table, stitched up, and too weak to move. The nurses transferred me to a gurney. I kept passing out from blood loss. The next time I regained consciousness, it was night time in the ICU. A light kept me awake. I saw a medic who had been in surgery and called him by name. I described everything I’d seen while out of my body. He was shocked, insisting someone must have told me. But no one could have told me since I’d been unconscious most of the time.
After this, my life changed. The aviation medical board rejected me, ending my pilot dreams. But I also realized death doesn’t exist. This revelation, though traumatic, became the defining moment of my life. It redirected my life path toward a difficult but profound search for meaning.

Uncertain, I had not practiced spirituality before.
What is your religion now?
Other or several faiths, I searched for answers to my questions for a long time, studied all the world's religions, and eventually came to my own understanding: God the Creator is embodied in every human being and in every living being. Through man, He learns about the world He created and evolves physically and spiritually. God the Creator does not know God the Architect (I do not know what to call the supreme being in the universe in English), but is sure of His existence and strives toward Him, though this can only be achieved through spiritual evolution. Over millions of years, it has evolved from the simplest single-celled organisms to humans, progressing from competition through cooperation to compassion, each time incarnating into new forms and improving itself. I also consider the teachings of the Buddha to be the most important knowledge revealed to the world, and the Sermon on the Mount by Jesus Christ to be the most accurate and concise instruction on how to end the cycle of rebirth on this suffering-filled earth.
Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs?
