Experience Description
At age fifteen, while lying on a hospital bed in the emergency room after I overdosed on methamphetamine, my heart stopped. The last thing I saw was my own flatline on the monitor.
Immediately, I saw myself from a third-person viewpoint. I sat up in the bed, raised my hands up to the light on the ceiling. The light then expanded all around me and I began floating upward. I then turned around and looked down at my physical body.
As I passed through the roof of the hospital, the light went away. I was hundreds of feet above the hospital. It was a dark evening, and I could see my city below. A being appeared next to me that had a basic human shape but with no distinct features like eyes, ears, a nose, or a mouth. It appeared to be made of water and was almost invisible, like in the movie "Predator" when the creature activates its cloak. We flew side by side over the south end of my town. I turned and looked over at the Being and it "looked" at me and then reassured me that I would be okay. But it didn't actually speak. I just knew what it was communicating to me. The Being had no gender, but it did feel more feminine and softer.
There was no noise during the experience, just silence and serenity. I never thought about the traumatic overdose I had just gone through. It was like I had no past. I was only in the now.
Suddenly, like a strong magnet, I was pulled back into my body. The serenity was gone. The doctors were all around me and my mom was crying. I was panicking, asking the doctors what had just happened to me.
For decades I've wondered what it all meant.
It did not make me religious, but it has made me more aware of the separation between my consciousness and this physical body I'm currently occupying.
I'm forty-six now. I'm not afraid to die. I don't want to die anytime soon, but I am also looking forward to it.
